FIB UNSOED Lecturer Collaborates with Toyota Foundation Japan to Conduct International Research

[unsoed.ac.id, Fri, 09/08/24] Dian Bayu Firmansyah, S.Pd., M.Pd., a lecturer from the Japanese Literature undergraduate programme at the Faculty of Humanities (FIB), conducted international research supported by the Toyota Foundation. As a member of the research team, Bayu provided a deep insight into how this project materialized. He was invited by his colleague in Japan, who is also a member of the Osaka Restaurant Association (ORA), which played a key role in the grant application.

Bayu was chosen for his experience in managing job fairs and study fair projects in Osaka Prefecture, as well as his strong track record in Japan-related research, including previous international grant awards.

His proposal, titled “Study on Mismatch Structure between Foreign Job Seekers and Job Providers in the Food Service Industry and Development of Resolves,” aims to address the mismatch between foreign job candidates and employers in the Japanese food industry.

Bayu and his team have developed a strategy to offer effective solutions to these issues, aiming to create a job-matching model that could serve as a benchmark for policy-making in Japan.

Despite facing challenges such as the diverse backgrounds of team members and communication limitations due to being spread across two countries, the team was able to maintain coordination through various online communication channels.

“Although these challenges are not too much of a hindrance, the team’s success in obtaining grant funding is a testament to the unity of vision and mission that the team has,” explained Bayu.

Currently, the team is in the initial stages of research, focusing on preparing data collection tools and scheduling Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). Bayu emphasized the importance of building trust to foster collaboration with the Japanese counterpart and offered advice to aspiring researchers who intend to apply for similar grants.

Bayu is eager to make a meaningful contribution to the advancement of knowledge and best practices in the Japanese food industry. Additionally, he aims to expand cross-border collaboration in research. This wonderful opportunity motivates him to fully commit to this project with the aspiration that it will have a widespread positive impact in both academic and social spheres.
