Tips for Fasting During Ramadan for People with Stomach Disorders

The month of Ramadan is a special month for Muslims. It is a month full of blessings and forgiveness that is eagerly awaited every year. Fasting during Ramadan is an obligation for every Muslim.

However, for some people, this poses a unique challenge due to health issues they may have. One such group includes those suffering from stomach disorders, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastritis, and dyspepsia, often referred to as stomach ulcers.

People with stomach disorders like this can safely fast without worrying about their condition recurring. Here are some tips from Dr Madya Ardi Wicaksono, M.Si., Head of the Soedirman Primary Outpatient Clinic:

  1. Avoid delaying suhoor and breaking the fast. When it is time for suhoor and breaking the fast, immediately fill your stomach with food to avoid stomach acid build-up.
  2. Avoid eating large portions. When it is time to break your fast, do so with water and light foods such as dates. Eating large portions will cause your stomach to feel bloated and uncomfortable.
  3. Consume foods high in fibre. Dietary fibre helps you feel full for longer. Dietary fibre can be found in grains, fruits, and vegetables. Naturally, dietary fibre can also be obtained from carbohydrate sources such as rice, potatoes, and corn.
  4. Avoid foods that trigger an increase in stomach acid. Spicy foods and oily foods (such as coconut milk and various fried foods) easily trigger the release of stomach acid. Consuming these foods during the fasting month can trigger various stomach complaints such as stomach pain, nausea, and bloating.
  5. Avoid caffeine and fizzy drinks. Caffeine and fizzy drinks are types of beverages that can easily trigger an increase in stomach acid, so it is advisable to avoid them, especially during the fasting month.
  6. Avoid lying down after eating. When someone lies down after eating, the contents of the stomach can flow into the oesophagus due to the force of gravity. In people with stomach disorders, this can cause nausea, chest pain, and a burning sensation in the chest. Therefore, after eating sahur, do not go back to sleep.
  7. Consult a doctor. If you experience stomach problems while fasting, please consult a doctor about your condition. This way, if treatment is necessary, it can be tailored to your physical condition and symptoms.

By maintaining stomach health during the holy month of Ramadan, fasting can be carried out solemnly and comfortably. So that when the day of victory arrives, it can be celebrated without being disturbed by stomach problems.
