UNSOED Students Win Gold Medal & Special Award at WICE 2022

[, Mon, 03/10/22] A proud achievement was obtained by a student at Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (Unsoed). This achievement was made in an international competition, the World Invention Competition and Exhibition (WICE) 2022, which was held at SEGi University, Kota Damansura, Malaysia, on September 25-30, 2022. In this event, the team won the Gold Medal.

The team consisted of students from the Faculty of Agriculture Unsoed Lilis Dwi Saputri (A1C019046) and Elsa Wulandari (A1C019094) along with students from Industrial Engineering, Rafi Triyanto (H1E020017,) and Electrical Engineering, Rizky Iqbal Permana Putra (H1A019064). With supervisor Afik Hardanto, S.TP., M.Sc., Ph.D, Lecturer of Agricultural Engineering, Faperta Unsoed.

In addition to getting a Gold Medal in the Applied Physics and Engineering Category, the team of students who graduated from PKM (Student Creativity Program) also received a Special Award from the Malaysia Innovation Invention Creativity Association (MIICA). The work of students who won this achievement was entitled "Utilization of Water Power Generator in The Tertiary Irrigation Canal for Paddy's Pest Handling".

Lilis Dwi Saputri said that this innovation was motivated by concerns regarding the many problems in the community, especially rice farmers. Rice plants are attacked by many pests, such as bird pests and insect pests. "Pest attacks can cause considerable losses for farmers," he said.

To overcome this problem, the team created a wapoge (Water Power Generator). This innovation was made by utilizing tertiary irrigation channels around the rice fields to be used as a pico-hydro power plant. "Wapoge is a device that produces two energy outputs; mechanical energy from the rotation of a turbine to move scarecrows and bells to repel bird pests and electrical energy which is channeled to lamps. The light from this lamp is useful for attracting attention and catching insect pests,” he explained.
