Collaboration between FISIP UNSOED and FCSHD UNIMAS in Research on Migrant Labour in Sarawak

 [unsoed.ac.id, Tues, 07/05/24] The Research Team from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (FISIP UNSOED) conducted a research collaboration with the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (FCSHD UNIMAS) on Monday, 6 May 2024.

The visit of this research team, which runs the International Research Collaboration (IRC) scheme from the UNSOED Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), represented by Prof. Imam Santosa and Ahmad Sabiq, aims to strengthen the research cooperation relationship between UNIMAS and UNSOED.

‘This research was conducted with the intention of developing an empowerment model for Indonesian migrant workers in Sarawak, Malaysia, with a focus on social capital management to overcome the challenges and problems faced by migrant workers,’ said UNSOED researcher, Prof Imam Santosa.

On this occasion, a research discussion was held between the FISIP UNSOED research team, and FCSHD UNIMAS at the university’s Ruai Wacana. The discussion was attended by a number of key officials, including Dr. Ida Juliana (Head of Faculty Strategy), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hardyman Barawi (Deputy Dean of Research and Commercialisation), Mohd Hafizan Hashim (Deputy Dean of Student Affairs), and Assoc Prof Dr. Sopian bin Bujang (Director of the Centre for Resilience and Human Potential).

Meanwhile, another researcher, Ahmad Sabiq said this meeting was an important step in the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UNSOED and UNIMAS, which is expected to make a significant contribution in understanding and overcoming the problems faced by Indonesian migrant workers in Sarawak.

‘Hopefully, this research collaboration can provide a foundation for better policy development in both countries in the protection and empowerment of migrant workers in the region,’ stated Sabiq.
